ABOUT NCSL:
The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and legislative staff of the nation's 50 states, its commonwealths and territories. NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues. Our mission is to serve state legislatures and other intergovernmental groups by providing support, promoting fresh ideas, connecting legislators and staff with experts and each other, and provide a strong, cohesive voice in the federal system. Since its founding in 1975, NCSL's staff has grown from 15 employees to over 150 employees in its offices in Denver, CO and Washington, D.C.

HOURS/PAY:
Internship is for academic credit only. Interns are expected to work 10 Ė 35 hours per week with flexible and variable hour schedule available. Many colleges and universities will give academic credit for internships. It is the studentís responsibility to contact his or her advisor and obtain academic credit within the institutionís guidelines.

DESCRIPTION:
NCSLís Washington DC Office is looking for interns that are studying and have an interest in a variety of policy topics including health and human services, education, criminal justice, international, emergency management, and natural resources and infrastructure policies and programming. Interns must demonstrate willingness to learn about the federal and state legislative aspects of these topics, the impact of federal actions on states, and a flexibility to work on some or all of these topics.

SPECIFIC PROJECTS / TASKS:
Interns would be responsible for working on a variety of tasks across several different programs. Tasks could include: researching and writing projects, attending hearings and coalition meetings, bill tracking and analysis, assisting with meeting and tour planning and preparation, assist with grant writing, and administrative and other tasks as necessary.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Interns will gain a better understanding of how state legislatures and the federal government work, understand where state and federal partners intersect in assigned policy areas, gain a deeper knowledge of how NCSL works and the services it provides to legislatures, acquire a basic understanding of how the federal government funds state programs, and learn skills that will enable them to speak professionally on policies and the state-federal intersection with those policies.
Qualifications & Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualified candidates should be currently enrolled in a bachelorís degree or graduate program or in a short waiting period between undergrad and graduate programs / law school and bar admittance. Candidates should possess strong computer and research experience and demonstrate skill and competence in writing clearly, communicating effectively and organizing complex assignments.
