Description of Position
Diablo Valley College is seeking a full-time (30 student contact hours/week), tenure track academic position in Counseling to begin August 2019. The successful applicant will be well qualified to provide academic, career, and personal counseling services utilizing a variety of counseling strategies/methods and teach department courses. The majority of the student contact will be with students interested and enrolled in the PUENTE Project, but will not be limited to this population.

Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to contractual duties for this position, all faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, in their departmental activities and in the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the counseling assignment may be in the evening program. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Guiding PUENTE & general students in exploring options and making decisions related to educational, career, and personal goals through individual and group counseling;

2. Creating a positive environment that provides students support and motivation toward achieving their goals;

3. Working with students to develop educational plans;

4. Teaching counseling and/or career courses, and facilitating workshops for PUENTE & general students;

5. Collaborating with instructional faculty in support of institutional goals;

6. Participating in the college governance process, including attendance at all department and division meetings, and serving on college wide committees, particularly those related to PUENTE, first generation college students and Chicano/Latino students;

7. Participating in training and professional development activities (including PUENTE state-wide meetings and PUENTE Summer Institute) to maintain current knowledge of counseling techniques and other effective student support intervention strategies;

8. Performing other related duties as assigned which may include evening and weekend assignments;

9. Providing PUENTE Coordination with duties including and not limited to: planning, implementation and coordination of events and activities that lead to the retention and transfer of PUENTE students; recruitment of prospective PUENTE students; educational planning for prospective and current PUENTE students; individual and group counseling; recruitment, training and coordination of mentors from the community to further support PUENTE students; instruction of personal development courses; attending all English PUENTE courses to further work with students.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience
The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university):

1. Masterís degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling (Note: A bachelorís degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.); OR
2. A valid California community college instructor credential authorizing full-time counseling; OR
3. The equivalent. (If you believe you meet the minimum qualifications via equivalency, please fill out the equivalency petition form contained in the online application.)

Desirable Qualifications
1. Background and experience in providing academic, career and personal counseling to community college students;
2. Demonstrated ability to provide varied counseling strategies appropriate to the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and learning styles of community college students;
3. Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development; innovation and improvement of counseling and teaching; and to assuming faculty responsibilities beyond the counseling department in a shared governance environment;
4. Experience teaching career planning, college orientation, college success, career/life planning or other courses and workshops, particularly those connected to a learning community and related to orienting underrepresented, first generation college students to college, transfer, career, student success and other support services;
5. Demonstrated experience, sensitivity, familiarity and interest to motivate, counsel, and teach traditionally underrepresented students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds such as Chicano/Latino, low income, first generation college students undocumented, and underrepresented students;
6. Familiarity with The University of Californiaís Office of the Presidentís PUENTE Implementation guidelines and programmatic requirements;
7. Experience and or commitment to coordinating a cohort model learning community including planning and implementing college tours, outside of class events, cultural activities, community mentor program;
8. Experience and or commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration. This includes planning, budgeting and teaching linked courses and creating dovetailed assignments and activities to foster transfer readiness and academic skills in PUENTE students, who are primarily Chicano/Latino, low-income, first-generation college students;
9. Bilingual/Bi-cultural in Spanish & English.
