The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty appointment at the associate or full professor rank as department chair beginning in July 2019.

Located in West Hartford, Connecticut, USJ is a comprehensive, Catholic institution serving the needs of its diverse student body through liberal and professional schools at the undergraduate and graduate levels while maintaining a strong commitment to developing the potential of women. With a total enrollment of more than 2,500 students who are diverse in terms of age and cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and enhanced by the values and intellectual tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, USJ allows students to thrive in a culture of achievement and collaboration. The university is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The Department of Education is approved by the Connecticut State Department of Education, and is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

The Department of Education, the largest department in the School of Arts, Science, Business and Education, consists of Early Childhood/Special Education, Special Education, Elementary, and Secondary Programs, and has a long-standing reputation of developing high quality educators in Connecticut. It is home to over 20 faculty and staff committed to social justice, to inclusive school communities, and to the preparation of school leaders who reflect a scholar-practitioner stance. The department currently serves approximately 600 students (undergraduate, graduate) on the university’s main campus, and in M.A. and career transition programs offered at sites throughout the state of Connecticut in collaboration with the K-12 Alliance. It offers the following programs:
• an undergraduate Elementary educator with teacher license
• an undergraduate Special Education teacher license with a cross-endorsement in Elementary Education and teacher license
• an undergraduate Secondary Educator with teacher license
• graduate Masters in the Art of Teaching (M.A.T) in ECSE, SPEC and Secondary education with teacher license
• Masters in ECSE, SPEC, Literacy, Teachers of English as a Second Language (TESOL), Multiple Intelligences (MI), Curriculum and Instruction (CI), Technology
Programs within the department require strong field and clinical experiences, reflect a commitment to partnerships with public schools and other agencies, and utilize both online and face-to-face approaches. Clinical experiences often include working with students in the Gengras Center, a campus-based laboratory school serving elementary, middle, high school and transition aged students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism and related behavioral challenges from more than 50 Connecticut and southern Massachusetts towns.

Position Description

This is a full-time, 12-month, faculty position responsible for serving as the chief administrator and educational leader of an academic department while exemplifying those faculty qualities most valued by the academic community: teaching excellence, scholarly and creative activities, and a commitment to university, professional, and community service. The selected candidate will be responsible for facilitating the development of department, college, and university policy; managing human and fiscal department resources; maintaining accreditations; ensuring a relevant curriculum; promoting collegiality in the department; and serving as an advocate for the department's needs within the university. We are seeking an engaged, dedicated scholar and educator who is committed to public education with a record of success both internally and externally with PK-12 partners. We also seek a leader with a nationally recognized scholarly and professional record in the department’s disciplines.

Required Skills/Qualifications

Qualifications for this position include: an earned doctoral degree in a discipline represented within the Department or a related field; a demonstrated record of excellence enabling appointment at the rank of associate or full professor; practical experience in the K-12 environment; a strong understanding of state, national, and specialized accreditation and assessment; a collaborative, collegial, open and communicative management style; cultural competency to work with diverse student and/or employee population; and an understanding of, and commitment to, USJ’s student-centered mission, vision, and values, particularly those of the Sisters of Mercy. Administrative experience at the level of program director or department chair.
