Safety Officer II (5751) |
The Safety Officer II assists the Director of Emergency Management & Safety in ensuring compliance with current federal, state and local environmental health and safety regulations at the Edwardsville campus as well as the Alton School of Dental Medicine and the East St. Louis Center.
The Safety Officer II works with Safety Officers and other staff to ensure that safety policies are developed and followed along with addressing all environmental compliance issues. Primarily handling construction and electrical safety issues, the Safety Officer II will also serve as backup for Safety Officer III positions when they are out of the office. The Safety Officer II will assist with other University safety related issues as needed.
This position is a current civil service vacancy at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. This position will close to applicants at close of business, 4:30 pm CST, on the posting end date.

Qualifications & Requirements
1. Any one or any combination of the following types of preparation:
(a) Credit for college training comparable to that leading to a major in engineering, science, safety, or health (such as safety engineering, civil engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, general engineering, environmental engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, physiology, industrial hygiene, occupational health, or occupational safety).
(b) Work experience as a safety inspector or officer that totals 1.0 unit according to the following conversion rates:
120 semester hours (or a Bachelor’s degree) in “a” = 1.0 unit
3 years of “b” = 1.0 unit.
2. Two years of experience as a safety inspector or officer in addition to the training/experience required in #1 above.
Please Note: Certification as a Certified Safety Professional by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals meets the requirements listed in #1.
-A Bachelor's degree in safety, environmental or other related field is preferred.
-Must be familiar with construction safety, electrical safety, fall protection, scaffolding and other related regulatory requirements.
-Strong knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations at the federal, state and local level.
-Must be able to develop and implement new environmental and safety programs when required.
-Knowledge and familiarity with emergency procedures and practices are preferred.
-Ability to work in a team oriented environment and ability to focus on departmental goals.
-Excellent oral and written communication skills.
