The newly released Michael Jackson album THIS IS IT, a twenty track, two-CD set, features one of Jackson's poems, called "Planet Earth." The poem is rich with deep metaphysical questions, and, is a call to environmental awareness.
Critics have, by in large, been pretty kind to the poem. Brad Wheeler of THE GLOBE AND MAIL called it "unsophisticated but poignant." Dan Aquilante of THE NEW YORK POST described it as "hokey at times, but there is a childlike quality that emerges after a few listens."
Here's the full text of "Planet Earth"--
Planet Earth, my home, my place
A capricious anomaly in the sea of space
Planet Earth, are you just
Floating by, a cloud of dust
A minor globe, about to bust
A piece of metal bound to rust
A speck of matter in a mindless void
A lonely spaceship, a large asteroid
Cold as a rock without a hue
Held together with a bit of glue
Something tells me this isn't true
You are my sweetheart, soft and blue
Do you care, have you a part
In the deepest emotions of my own heart
Tender with breezes, caressing and whole
Alive with music, haunting my soul.
In my veins I've felt the mystery
Of corridors of time, books of history
Life songs of ages throbbing in my blood
Have danced the rhythm of the tide and flood
Your misty clouds, your electric storm
Were turbulent tempests in my own form
I've licked the salt, the bitter, the sweet
Of every encounter, of passion, of heat
Your riotous color, your fragrance, your taste
Have thrilled my senses beyond all haste
In your beauty I've known the how
Of timeless bliss, this moment of now.
Planet Earth, are you just
Floating by, a cloud of dust
A minor globe, about to bust
A piece of metal bound to rust
A speck of matter in a mindless void
A lonely spaceship, a large asteroid
Cold as a rock without a hue
Held together with a bit of glue
Something tells me this isn't true
You are my sweetheart, soft and blue
Do you care, have you a part
In the deepest emotions of my own heart
Tender with breezes, caressing and whole
Alive with music, haunting my soul.
Planet Earth, gentle and blue
With all my heart, I love you.

Thanks Richard for posting Michael's poem. Recently, I saw the movie, THIS IS IT. Reading his poem, after seeing him in action, magnafies the ties we feel we have with Micheal, who is so beautiful to behold. As a poet, I loved the simple words but powerful linkages and ready imagery in his poem; a tribute to the earth. More personally for me, I see it as another volume in the litany for us who write about the often overlooked glory of our own planet, much like my poem "Most Astonishing - The Spirit of Life".
I can't wait to hear the THIS IS IT CD, to hear Michael recite it.
Richard, Thanks again for being so thoughtful in sharing.

Dude had skills. Got to give him props I read most of it looking for more...A beautiful song...Can I get in here?...Hey Mike this one's for you
I SING
May I? May I sing a song of hope and change?
May I travel along so precious terrain?
May I touch you from the truer side?
The depth of passion in your eyes.
May I speak to parts never revealed?
Apply a balm to help you heal.
Or should I settle softly beside of you.
To praise the spirit alive inside of you.
What ever you need I will provide for you,
May I sing a song?
I’d sing of compassion and second chances.
I’d sing of hope and fruitful glances.
I’d sing of seeds brought forth anew.
I’d sing in response of request by you.
I’d sing of trials encountered and overcome.
I’d sing of progress with each new sun.
I’d sing of courage though you may run.
I’d sing a song for you.
I savor yesterdays lessons learned.
I savor the hope in feeling firm.
I savor the opportunity, while waiting
My turn.
I sing this song for you.

Both of these poems are impressive!! I hope you don't mind me sharing as well. This was composed on August 29, 2009 which would have been Micheal's 51st birthday:
MICHEAL'S FINAL CALL
Happy Birthday to We, our Michael's now free.
Each 29th We'll recall our Dark Star's rise... crest... and fall.
Our sister's first crush, didn't know he made "Art"
We just knew Mike was FINE ~ big 'fro, smile, nose, and heart.
But the vultures, they saw it, saw the coffers he'd fill,
With no Village to guard him he was ripe for a kill.
They grew fat from his vision, fed their spawn from his sweat
Watched Black Genius in action, moments none will forget.
Then maturity blossomed, (time oft' removes scales),
"Systematic Racism"... the TRUE Thriller, unveiled.
Denigrated his features, sullied Virgo's love for youth
Knowing once tagged "molester" it's too late for truth.
The damage was done, African profile long gone,
Years of pain, stress ~ now cornered (we now know, not for long).
With Black Panther prowess he prepared one last show
Yet the toll of his bridle... only brothers can know.
You can't push a TRUE artist, art's a gift... a soul's choice.
You can't push a true brother just because he's soft voiced.
"King of Pop"? "Entertainer"? - they insult on TV,
PHILANTHROPIC PHARAOH is his true legacy.
*Millions* given in gift from Mike's powerful name,
Taught celebs the world over the true purpose of "fame".
No 1 person's to blame, The System's everywhere,
We're ALL sick from its poison, zombied choices we share.
Universal Law is the teaching to burn deep in our kids,
We're already half-living, like poor Michael did.
See... The System is silent. That's its lie, its New Twist.
You try telling Mike's heart: "Racism Doesn't Exist".

Siebra: You have the true heart of a poet. You put your passion in your poetry and made a statment that was full of beauty.
I was always an MJ fan. Two of my favorite all time songs are "MAN IN THE MIRROR" and 'HUMAN NATURE". What really blew me away was learning that he donated millions to the burn center that treated him after his accident. He was an incredibly generous giving soul. HOWEVER--I don't agree that it was racism that killed him. It is way more complicated than that. Don't forget--he had tons of white fans all over the world.
He, himself, was a tortured soul, robbed of the simple pleasures of childhood. whatever the forces were that drove him to take his overdose, the world will miss him. He gave us so much.
